Duty cast iron base: Heavy base weight and the three-hole screw positioning can reduce noise, and make the work more stable without vibration and movement.
This is the No. 5156E model with a US 110V 3-prone plug. It is a fine tool at a more than reasonable price. I was very surprised at the build quality; other than a few sharp places on unfinished bottom of the drill table (fingers beware!) it is well- built and finished. The feed mechanism is tight and smooth. It drills accurate holes with no chuck wobble. The speed adjustment wheel (rheostat?) works well. It requires two carbon brushes for the motor (installed) and includes two spare brushes (manual says to check brushes after 50 hours of use). Direct drive mechanism (no belts required). I purchased it specifically for a hobby project where I needed to drill a number of accurate #43 holes in 3/16th (5mm) round soft-wood stock. It worked like a charm.UPDATE 10 Aug 2020:I broke down and purchased a UMI Step UP 110 to 220 Voltage Converter (1200 watt). This drill runs extremely well on the correct 220 AC voltage. It is quite a bit noisier as well (I suspect the gears may need some lube). The no load max speed power draw is less than 300 watts (watts are the same at 110 or 200 volts AC). Minimum is about 150 watts. The highest draw I could get was a bit over 410 watts (by attempting to hold the chuck at maximum speed --- which I could NOT do).The additional requirement for the Voltage Converter doubles both the cost and weight of this tool reducing its perceived value greatly.=====What you have here is is a low cost gear reduction 1/2 drill motor on a stand. I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be less noisy than I expected. I was extremely disappointed with the speed control. Of the "six ranges" only the last two are useful as the motor does not spin up in any of the lower 4 ranges. The last range is also a "bypass" of the speed controller. That is the reason for the loss of one star in this review. My Tachometer only showed a maximum speed of 1,500 RPM. That is the reason for the loss of another star in this review. The manufacturer should have spent a bit more effort in correctly specifying the motor and speed controller. The should have at least noticed when the speed did not come up to specification. As supplied the motor requires something like a "UMI Step UP 110 to 220 Voltage Converter" to operate properly with US standard AC current.Note: The mains lead has a "220VAC Type A plug" which just happens to fit into a US 110VAC socket. What is in the box: The drill assembly, base, chuck key, spare brushes, a 5mm hex key for the column clamp, a 4mm hex key for the column base screws and a 3mm hex key for the gib adjustment screws. The latter is useless without a 7mm spanner for the locknuts. So they might as well left that one out. Now where are those brushes when one needs them five years down the road (I do not really expect the motor to last that long)??? I wrapped mine in a plastic bag and taped them into a recess in the base. The value in this tool comes from the compactness and light weight (approximately 12 pounds) for a bench drill with a 8 inch deep throat. The stand appears to be solid and well built and about 1/2 the value of the unit. I also detected no vibration or wobble in the spindel. That is likely to change. Although the spindle does have a single ball bearing the upper end is only supported by a bushing for the large reduction gear. At first blush it seems a fair match for my Taig Micro Lathe. The question of longevity can only be addressed in the future.Works well, I drilled 1 inch hole in a a steel plate that was 3/4 of an inch thick. The base has 1/4 inch slots to connect the a vise. All the vise have 1/2 in slots. Had to drill through the actual base to attach a vise. Also the depth adjustment does not hold in place because the screw and nut are encased in plastic and it does not take much to strip the plastic. Everything else works as expected. It's nice and smaller than the huge ones.I cannot get through more than 2-3 3/4" MDF drill holes without this thing overheating. The reason is simple. It operates at 50 Hz and that causes stress on the motor. Within a few drillings the drill bit will slow down tremendously. You have to pull back, wait a minute and then proceed with the drilling. It also lacks power. Love the portability, weight, and size but you get what you pay for and the size tradeoff also means a smaller motor so that is also contributing to this 98 lb weakling's poor performance.Do not recommend. But I did reinforce an adage that I (normally) live by: Buy quality, Cry once.I went on the cheap on this because I was bulk replacing a ton of old equipment and spent my wad on a Jet Drum Sander, Dewalt Mitre Saw, and Dewalt Table saw. I should have waited but my old drill press was so old and war-torn that it was on the verge of being dangerous.I plan on replacing this with something that works soon. Again, Buy quality, Cry once!Strong motor, runs well, good rpm's, stable on work surface and very straight forward use. Took awhile to get here but worth the wait. Have only had it about 2 weeks but so far very satisfied.Good light duty drill press. I purchased it because it was small and had a 1/2" chuck. Give the price, it's well made, and has very minimal chuck runout. I have a much heavier unit in my outside shop, but this is good for a "fine work" workshop space with limited square footage. It is super well built.Works nice as it should. I use it for drilling a variety of spade bits into hard wood for railings. If the bits are sharp there are no issues. It can bog down if you push it. Only issue I had was the depth stop. I replaced it with metal instead of the provided plastic piece.
