CONS (Minor really and only a couple things):- I was not a fan of the screw guide. I agree to it’s purpose, to stay centered in the (screw slot) channel, but if you’re not careful the screw itself can slip off target before it gets a chance to “bite” the metal. Plus you can’t see very well into the channel while using it. I also found the self-tapping screws a bit slow to “bite” the metal. After one attempt, between poor viewing and potential slipping, I went to my trusty metal drill bits which allowed me to drill quick & accurate pilot holes for the screws. Just be sure to stay centered in the channel.- Once drilling into the studs, I had the provided drill bit slip-off the screw head several times. The screw head itself was getting rounded inside (stripped). Unlike a wood or decking screw, it seemed the provided screws struggled to go into the stud. Be sure to keep firm (straight) pressure while drilling to try and avoid slipping and you should be fine.PROS (There were several):- Overall I found the materials to be well made. The slates are very strong and powder coated very well.- I got the black slates and I think they look great! A real space saver for sure.- String Swing did a good job to provide everything you should need to get the project done. All you need is your own drill and level.- I called customer service a few times during my install. They were patient with me and answered all my questions. Very good service.- If your order does not come with the thin vinyl screw channel trim concealer, call customer service and they’ll get it to you. New stocks have the trim, but some older packages still in stocks may not have it. Again, very good customer service.Things to Keep in Mind:- I ordered my 10-guitar wall kit (8 ft) via Amazon. It comes shipped with four (24”) slates as opposed to two (48”) wall slates you might receive if ordered directly through String Swing. This made leveling a little more challenging. It also made fitting the smaller slates a bit more challenging between the spans of each stud. Assuming your studs are 16” on center, be sure to think that through so that you install the slates as directed in the instructions (slate ends not to exceed 7” from stud and slate joints not on a stud).- The directions imply the connecting plates that go between each slate will fit tightly to where you may need to press or tap the slates together end-to-end. One reviewer on Amazon said his were extremely tight. Mine were the opposite. The connecting plates were quite loose and did very little to hold the slates together during assembly. After speaking to String Swing, they said it’s fine. The plates just help to keep everything aligned and secure well once mounted to the wall.- Be sure to install the slate with the “lip” pointing down. The grove/slotted edge goes up. The written instructions don’t really say it, but in Step #8 you can see it in the illustration if you look closely.- I used white chalk to pre-mark where the slates would be drilled. Wipes off easy.- If working alone, and because I pre-drilled my slates, I found it helpful to use small nails to hold the slate to the wall as I aligned everything up. The nail held everything in position so that I could get one or two screws started.I’m pleased with the product and final result. Really opened up my music room. The only down side, my wife is not happy about all the open space and hanger slots now that I have more room for guitars. I think she knows what next.
